HOME CARE PROGRAM Additional Information

"It was hard to admit that I needed some help with things. Elder Services of Cape Cod  and the Islands connected me with the right solutions!"

Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, a private, not-for-profit agency, implements the state funded Home Care Program. We coordinate in-home and community-based services designed to help elders remain safely in their own home. Whether you are looking for help for yourself, for a neighbor, or for a family  member, please call us to make a referral for Home Care services.

What is the Home Care Program?

The Home Care Program provides eligible elders with the supportive services that they may need to live safely and independently at home. Services may include meal preparation, shopping, homemaking, personal care, emergency response systems, or adult day care.

How do I qualify?

A professional care manager from Elder Services will make a home visit to see if you are eligible for services. While there, the care manager will assess your health and social needs. You must be a resident of Massachusetts, be sixty years of age or older, and  have a “critical need” for services. In addition, you must meet certain income guidelines. During the home visit the care manager will  determine your eligibility and work with you to develop a care plan that best meets your needs.

Who provides the Home Care services?

Elder Services has contracts with qualified provider agencies who perform the work or provide the service.  Elder Services pays for the services with funds provided by the state.  Your care manager will select the best provider in your neighborhood to perform the service for you, and work with you to ensure that your needs are being met.

Is there a cost for these services?

There may be a monthly charge for your services.  The co-payment is based on your income, not your assets. The lower your income is, the smaller your payment will be.  Elders with very low incomes are not charged any co-payment, but may make a donation.

"I never thought that I would need help taking care of my parents.  I'm glad that Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands was there to help!"

Trying to find help for an aging family member may be overwhelming. You don't have to do it alone. The state funded Respite Care Program supports those that provide daily services to any Massachusetts elder. We provide the rest, support, and assistance that caregivers may need in order to continue this important task. If you or someone you know needs help with the stressful or exhausting task of care giving, please give us a call and ask about the Respite Care Program and other services that are available.

What is Respite Care?

Daily care giving for an elder can be stressful, costly, and tiring.  The state funded Respite Care Program is designed to provide support and assistance to caregivers so that they can continue to help an aging family member or friend.

How do I qualify?

If you are the daily unpaid caregiver to an elder in Massachusetts and you need help with the many duties of care giving, you may be eligible for Respite Care.  A professional care manager will make a home visit to determine if Respite Care is right for you.  Your respite services could include adult day care for the elder, the assurance of safety from an emergency response system, or assistance for you in completing household management tasks.

Can I select the type of services that I need?

Certainly!  Your care manager will make scheduled calls and visits to ensure that the services are meeting the needs of both the elder and the caregiver. The care manager will arrange for your services from the provider agency as well as connecting you to other available resources and benefits, and providing advocacy to help you get the care you need.

Must our household be low income to qualify?

No. There is no income limit to eligibility and the only income counted is that of the care recipient(s).  The co-payment will be calculated during the home visit so that you will know the monthly cost of your services.
